The Spark Animation Festival is a must-attend event in Canada, promoting the world of animation. This year’s festival took place over three days, from 24 to 27 October. Animation professionals and students alike were able to meet up for conferences, workshops, meetings and screenings. Several competitions were organised as part of the event, including one for student films.

During Spark Animation, a screening dedicated exclusively to French student short films was also organised, called “Spotlight on France”. In all, fourteen films selected from French animation schools were screened, including three from ESMA: Avec le Do de la Cuillère, Œil pour Œil and Pour une Poignée de Caramels.

three films in the running, two winners

It didn’t take long for the new generation of 3D Animation and Special Effects filmmakers to make their way from festival to festival, less than two months after their graduation jury.

And so, crossing the Atlantic, three short films from the class of 2019 were selected to take part in the Spark Animation Festival in the Student Film category.

Selected films :

  • With the Do de la Cuillère
  • An eye for an eye
  • For a handful of caramels

Award-winning films :

  • An eye for an eye
  • For a handful of caramels

In a rare occurrence, the films Œil pour Œil and Pour une Poignée de Caramels were both awarded the 3D Student Film prize. The jury was unable to decide between the two productions, choosing to reward them equally!

Sophie Gilbert, Director of Education at ESMA Montréal, attended the event. She was able to collect both titles on behalf of the students.

We congratulate the directors of these films, which have paved the way for their first festival awards, and we have no doubt that many of our students’ other productions will be hailed by their peers.
