In a Russian village in the 19th century, a tax collector called Volkov barges into the home of a family of humble peasants who cannot pay. Escorted by two dogs, the man turns the parents into Russian dolls, picks them up and heads back to his manor house.

The children, Izolda and Boris, return from chopping wood to discover that their parents have been taken away by Volkov, and decide to venture into his home to find them.

Once inside the manor, Izolda orders Boris to stay on the ground floor while she searches upstairs.

As she climbs the stairs, Izolda makes a step creak, attracting the attention of the taxman and his dogs.

She comes face to face with the collector who, by opening a magic Fabergé egg, transforms her into a Russian doll.

Boris retrieves his sister’s doll and tries to flee, pursued by the dogs.

He arrives in a room with shelves full of Russian dolls, which the boy climbs to escape.

The tax collector enters and rushes to protect the display case containing his own transformed family.

Boris is attacked by a dog and falls, taking the cupboards full of dolls with him.

He wakes up near the magic egg and tries to change his sister back, but to no avail.

The enraged tax collector tries to get his Fabergé egg back, but the dogs side with Boris.

The man tries to persuade him to join him but the boy, resigned, opens the egg and turns Volkov into a Russian doll.

Alone, surrounded by his two dogs, Boris clutches the magic egg in his hand.
