One evening in the dark streets of New York, Inspector Gallimard walks slowly, lighting a cigarette, on his way to analyse a new crime scene.
Little by little, Gallimard, a tall, charismatic goat in a long mackintosh, arrives and discovers a bloodied corpse. He analyses the scene with disconcerting seriousness.
Suddenly, a policeman stops him, and the atmosphere changes dramatically.

Gallimard, now in his bathrobe, appears to be a completely different person and finds himself licking the face of a completely drunk man in the same alleyway.
The scene does not appear to be a crime scene.
Behind him stands an annoyed police officer, who orders him to leave and leave the person alone, whom he intends to take care of himself.
The atmosphere darkens again, the music starts up again, and the inspector plunges back into his own delirium. A team of policemen prevent him from investigating, but Gallimard is not deterred.
He decides to continue his investigation on his own. In the alleyway, he discovers a pair of panties that will be his first clue, pointing to a suspect called PIPA.
Gallimard heads for a lamppost to discover Pipa, the femme fatale, hanging from an electric wire.

She performs a sensual act before falling awkwardly onto a billboard. As for reality, it reveals Pipa, a portly, vulgar prostitute with a gravelly voice. The two characters discuss the investigation.
Gallimard must not allow itself to be tempted by this seductress. Pipa is not the culprit. The detective then heads for Léon’s supermarket.
Léon, stoned, slow and relaxed, already knows Gallimard. During the interrogation, Gallimard enters into his own vision, transforming Léon into a hyperactive informant with extreme tics.
Suspicion grows, Gallimard threatens him, but Léon’s boss, Spike, suddenly appears.
Gallimard becomes increasingly delirious when he discovers that Spike is his nemesis. Gallimard starts a fight! Epic in vision and super ridiculous in reality.
After a senseless fight, Spike is defeated by Gallimard. Gallimard leaves proud of himself for having finished his investigation, when in reality he is stealing the police car and being chased by all the other characters.
