A red wanderer called Red, with a red bird on his hat, walks through a white desert filled with white flowers that release spores. Suddenly, he hears the sound of a landslide.
The following day, at the bottom of a desert rift, Nawe, a young Poutoupou girl, crosses her village.
She joins her grandfather Baty and they head off into the surrounding forest. Suddenly, there was a thud. Further on, they discover a sandfall along the fault, with a white flower and its spores on top.

Baty gives Nawe the flower. The bird, observing the scene, seizes the flower, with Nawe in hot pursuit. Further on, she finds the bird with Red, who is standing in front of her. He spills his blood on the flower, which turns red. He hands it to Nawe, who accepts it.
She then feels a strong pain but Red forces her to keep it. Baty intervenes, chasing Red away. The vagrant flees but Baty collapses: stains spread over him.
Later, the villagers are at Baty’s bedside. Red approaches, red flowers in hand. Alerted by Baty, the villagers block his path as Baty dies of the disease. The grieving villagers chase Red away. At night, the villagers hold a wake.
Red sneaks into the village with red flowers and breaks into Nawe’s house as she lies dying, covered in stains. A landslide sounds outside. Red places a red flower in Nawe’s hand. The flower begins to drain Nawe’s spots and she wakes up, healed. She sees the flower and realises that Red is standing next to her.

On their return from the wake, the villagers marvel at the suspended spores. However, nature in the village rots at their touch. The villagers see Red leaving Nawe’s house with his bouquet. Angered, they threaten him and Red drops his bouquet on the floor. Nawe tries to call out to the villagers but discovers that they are covered in stains and is jostled by them.
Hunted by the villagers, Red flees into the forest. Nawe seizes the abandoned bouquet and rushes after them, guided by the bird. The villagers surround Red in a cave and pounce on him. Nawe arrives in front of the cave but Red lies dead on the ground in the midst of the villagers. His body turns white.
All the red flowers brought by Nawe turn white again. Frightened, Nawe dropped the bouquet, which fell to the ground, releasing a multitude of spores. In the cave, the Poutoupous writhe in pain, poisoned by the toxic spores.
From the top of the cliff, the forest and the village are covered in a fog of spores. Small footprints can be seen on the sand. The shadow of the bird hovers overhead to follow them.
