Jane, aged 45, is taking her mother home; following the death of her husband, Paul, her mother has come to stay with her for a while.

On returning to this house, now devoid of life, Patsy, aged 65, comes across a woollen doll she had made whilst her husband was ill.

The doll’s resemblance to Patsy’s husband brings back memories. Jane then offers her a cup of tea to help her relax.

Once their attention had been diverted from the soft toy, it suddenly came to life. Patsy, returning to the living room, came face to face with this living, breathing creature made of wool and screamed in fright.

Once the initial surprise had worn off, Jane remained very pragmatic about the situation, but Patsy, for her part, saw it as a glimmer of hope that she might be reunited with her late husband. She decided to keep the little soft toy with her.

As time goes by, Patsy becomes increasingly convinced that her dear husband, Paul, is hiding inside this silent woollen soft toy. Clumsy and amusing, the soft toy breathes new life into Patsy, who is smiling again.

One day, Patsy suggests to the soft toy that they finish a game of chess she’d started with Paul. The soft toy knocks all the pieces over; shocked, Patsy stops it.

She calls out to the soft toy, using her husband’s first name. As the soft toy does not recognise her, Patsy, left alone, breaks down, weeps and collapses in grief at the harsh reality that the soft toy is not her late husband.

On the phone with her daughter, with a half-written letter in front of her, Patsy tries to explain to her how unhappy she is and how much she wants to leave, bidding her a final farewell.

Jane, who didn’t see it that way and was feeling overwhelmed, promised to ring her back.

The house is empty and quiet. In every room there are objects made of peach-coloured and blue wool. In the garden, there are two wool dolls, looking like Patsy and Paul; next to them is a letter marked ‘For Jane’.
